Summary El vampiro (1957)

A pretty young Mexican girl returns to her hometown to make funeral arrangements for her beloved aunt, who has just died. Soon she begins to hear disturbing stories about the town being infested by vampires, and she eventually begins to suspect that her remaining aunt and the mysterious next=door neighbor may be involved.

Synopsis El vampiro (1957)

The train has arrived in the small Mexican town of Sierra Negra. As the workers unload a large box of soil from Bakonia, Hungary addressed to Senor M Duval, Marta Gonzalez [Ariadna Welter] also gets off the train and looks around for her Uncle Emilio [José Luis Jiménez], who was supposed to pick her up and escort her to the Sicomoros (Sycamores), the Gonzalez family hacienda. Unfortunately, a landslide has prevented the trains from running all afternoon, so Marta wasn't expected until tomorrow and Don Emilio has gone home. Marta isn't the only one with no ride from the station. Enrique [Abel Salazar] has been sitting on a bench for hours, hoping to catch a ride. Just when it looks like they'll have to remain at the station overnight, a wagon arrives to pick up the box of soil. Enrique convinces the driver to give Marta and himself a lift.

When the driver has taken them as far as he will go, Marta and Enrique are forced to walk the rest of the way along the dark, foggy, lonely road, unaware that they're being followed by a woman dressed in a flowing black gown. Marta is eager to return to the beautiful hacienda where she grew up showered with love from Uncle Emilio and his two sisters, Marta's aunts Eloisa [Carmon Montejo] and María Teresa [Alicia Montoya]...especially Marta's beloved aunt María Teresa. Marta received a letter just two days ago from Emilio, telling her that María Teresa was ill. Marta doesn't know it, but María Teresa has already died and been interred in the family crypt. It's for the best, explains Aunt Eloisa, the woman in black who was following them on the road and who doesn't look like she's aged a day in the ten years that Marta has been away. María Teresa has been sliding into insanity for the past five years, convinced that there was a vampire in the house who was after her blood. Night after night she would lock herself in her room and surround herself with crucifixes to ward off the vampires and with mirrors so that she could recognize a vampire by the lack of a reflection.

As unprepared as Marta was when she heard of her aunt's death, she is equally as unprepared to see the once elegant hacienda in its current state of deterioration. The one remaining manservant, Anselmo [José Chávez], explains that it is impossible to get workers because almost all the villagers have left Sierra Negra. As there are no hotels operating in Sierra Negra, Emilio invites Enrique to stay the night at the hacienda. Marta would be surprised if she knew that Enrique is a doctor and that it was Emilio who sent for him, hoping to have him assess María Teresa's state of mind, what with her going on about vampires and all.

What Emilio doesn't know is that there is, indeed, a vampire at the hacienda. In fact, there are two. Eloisa has been turned into a vampire by their neighbor, Senor Duval [Germán Robles], and Eloisa wants to sell the hacienda to Duval. Unfortunately, the agreement between the three siblings was that the majority must rule for any sale to take place, and Emilio is against selling. Now that María Teresa is dead and her share of the estate has been passed to Marta, it is Marta who must cast the deciding vote. In order to assure that Marta votes in favor of the sale, Duval and Eloisa plan to make Marta a vampire, too. Now that the soil has arrived from Hungary, it is also Duval's plan to revive his brother, Conde Karol de Lavud [Lavud = Duval, get it?]. With Karol returned and possession of the Gonzalez hacienda, the House of Lavud will rule again.

That very night Duval pays a visit to the Gonzalez hacienda in order to meet with Marta. Unfortunately, Marta feels exhausted from the day's events and begs off. While readying herself for bed, Marta notices that her aunt casts no reflection in the mirror, but she dismisses it as tiredness. As Duval sits in the library talking with Emilio and Enrique, they are surprised to see a book fall from a shelf, though no one was near it. When Enrique goes to replace the book, he notices it open to a page describing the murder of Conde Karol de Lavud, founder of the Sicomoros, native of Bakonia, Hungary. Interested in this ancestor of the Sicomoros, Enrique takes the book to his room. As he begins to page through the aged text, he hears someone singing a lullaby and assumes it is Marta. During the night, the ghosts are busy. María Teresa enters Marta's bedroom and places a cross on her pillow. Eloisa sneaks into Enrique's room to rummage through his luggage and finds his medical bag. Why would a doctor be here, she wonders? Duval enters Marta's bedroom, but is thwarted by the cross on her pillow...until her hand knocks it off. Then he pounces. First bite.

The next morning, as Enrique prepares to leave for the train station, he comes upon Marta seated in the courtyard, looking soulfully at a closed door. It was my room when I was little, Marta explains. María Teresa would sing her to sleep each night with a special lullaby that she made up. Marta begins to sing it, and Enrique recognizes it as the same lullaby he heard last night. Marta assures him that it could not be, because she didn't sing it and the only other person who knows the song is dead. Enrique opens the door to the bedroom and finds it, like the rest of the courtyard, filled with dust and spiderwebs, but when Marta goes in to take a look, she sees her dead aunt standing there and starts screaming. Emilio comes running and is shocked to hear Marta describe María Teresa exactly as she looked when she was laid in her coffin, with her hair loose and carrying a crucifix. Emilio begs Enrique to stay for a few hours more. Although anxious to get away from this madhouse, Enrique agrees.

After Marta has had a chance to calm down, Eloisa informs her that Sr Duval is coming for another visit. As Marta fixes her makeup, she again notices that Eloisa casts no refection in the mirror. Knowing that she's been found out, Eloisa invites everyone to have a drink of wine before Enrique leaves for the train station. While pouring it, Eloisa places a drug in Marta's wine. Enrique returns the book he was reading, explaining that it's an interesting account of how Count Lavud was thought to be a vampire by the villagers, so they staked him and buried him one hundred years ago in the crypt. Legend says that a vampire must be buried alone; if he is buried amongst others, another vampire will come looking for revenge.

Suddenly, Marta collapses. Dr Enrique examines her and pronounces her dead. Hours pass. As the family keeps vigil over Marta's body, Anselmo notices a twitch in her little finger. Enrique re-examines her and finds that her pupils are constricted and that a mirror placed near her mouth shows breath. Emilio says that Marta's "death" was similar to that of María Teresa and wonders whether María Teresa might also have awakened after being interred in her coffin. They rush down to the crypt and open her coffin. It's empty! Anselmo and Maria (the maid) reveal that they found a note in María Teresa's scapular just before being sealed in her tomb. The note said: "I'm not dead. Get me out of here, and take me to the tunnel behind the cross." This they did. Anselmo leads them into the tunnel where they find María Teresa, alive and well. She explains how Duval and Eloisa gave her a powder, just like it was given to Marta, to make it look like she was dead so that she'd awaken in her coffin and die of suffocation. They're vampires, she cries, and they're going to try and revive Duval's brother. Emilio and Enrique begin to believe her.

Meanwhile, Marta is reaching consciousness, only to see Duval standing at the foot of her bed. Her screams bring Enrique, Emilio, Anselmo, and Maria running, but Duval has carried Marta off through a secret passage behind a bookcase. Emilio goes looking for a lantern, but Enrique lights a candle and goes alone in search of Marta. A stone staircase leads him down into a maze of tunnels which connect with the crypt where Duval's coffin rests. Meanwhile, Eloisa attacks Emilio, biting his neck. Then she tries to attack Enrique, but María Teresa grabs her from behind and strangles her. Just as Duval is about to bite the again unconscious Marta for the second time, Enrique bursts into the room. Duval grabs a sword and attacks Enrique. Armed with a lighted torch, Enrique fights off Duval's sword, until Duval succeeds in lobbing off the firey head of the torch, which falls on the floor and starts some curtains on fire. Just then, the cock crows. Duval races out of the room, leaving Enrique to fight with two renfields while he jumps into his coffin. Maria Teresa opens the coffin and drives a stake through Duval's heart. At that moment, Marta awakens, Enrique overpowers the renfields and carries Marta from the flames, and Eloisa turns to dust. Eventually, the flames envelope Duval's coffin.

Epiloque: The train has arrived in Sierra Negra. Enrique and Marta say their goodbyes. The train pulls out of the station, but Enrique remains on the platform, kissing Marta. [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]

Summary Vampire Bats (2005)

Freshmen friends of the Tate University go to an underground party in the woods nearby the local cemetery. After a death, two of the students are arrested until a professor suggests that bats might be the real culprit.

In Mercier, Louisiana, the freshmen friends of the Tate University Jason Ortiz, Aaron and Eden go to an underground party in the woods nearby the local cemetery. They drink the punch spiced with ecstasy and completely drugged, Jason is attacked and killed by violent bats. When the police finds the body, they arrest Aaron and Eden as prime suspects. However, their biology professor Maddy Rierdon sees the corpse and advises that the youngster had been actually bitten by animals. When Maddy catches bats using a goat and a net, she realizes that the animals are mutant vampire bats with extra fangs and that the modification of the breed was caused by the water dumped by Carbide Waste Resources in the river. While a group seeks the lair of the bats and a means to eliminate them, Maddy discloses corruption in the town.

A former USDA voracious insect specialist who is now a college professor, Rierdon (Lawless), in search of a simpler life, has moved to Louisiana with her husband, Dryer (Neal), and their two daughters. But her life becomes more complicated when one of her students is found dead with his body covered in mysterious puncture marks and completely depleted of blood. When two of Rierdon's students are implicated in the boy's death, she immediately gets caught up in the investigation and discovers that the student was killed by a swarm of bats. When other attacks occur and more people are found dead in a similar fashion, evidence leads Rierdon to discover that these are not ordinary bats, but aggressive vampire bats that have mutated due to a tainted water supply. Though she tries to discourage them, several of her students volunteer to help in the investigation, which could all put them in grave danger. But Rierdon knows that she doesn't have a choice and must find a way to halt the bats' deadly progress. Brett Butler stars as Rierdon's strong willed sister-in-law, Shelly; Bottoms portrays the town's mayor, Hank Poelker; and Ferguson has a cameo as a fisherman.

Summary Vampires: Los Muertos (2002)

A vampire hunter and a priest fight a band of the walking dead in Mexico.

In Mexico, another vampire slayer, Derek Bliss, is hired by a shady priest and aided by a group of fellow slayers in finding a large nest of 'suckers' and their powerful leader, a vampire princess. She is seeking a legendary black crucifix - the same crucifix used unsuccessfully in the first movie to perform a ritual which will enable vampires to walk in sunlight and be invulnerable.

Vampires: Los Muertos centers on vampire hunter-for-hire Derek Bliss. When a new client hires him to hunt down a particularly powerful vampire queen in Mexico, soon he gathers a hunting crew and sets off across Mexico for some vampire hunting action.

Synopsis Vampires: Los Muertos (2002)

NOTE: Sequel to John Carpenter's Vampires (1998).

Los Muertos picks up after the vampires went south into Mexico and Father Guiteau stashed the Bersier cross in a monastery. Vampire hunter Derek Bliss [Jon Bon Jovi] has been commissioned to seek and destroy some vampires in northern Mexico before they can move north to San Diego and other places in the U.S. The only problem is that the unnamed client wants to hire a team, not someone working solo. Getting together a team is a bit difficult for Derek because everyone on Chief Brody's recommended list keeps turning up dead. Father Guiteau, who was a member of the original team lead by Jack Crow, died last month. All the priests at the monastery where he moved the Bersier cross were killed by vampires only a day or two after Derek came looking for Guiteau.

Eventually, Derek manages to put together a team, unlikely as it is. It consists of Zoey [Natasha Wagner] (a woman he met in a diner who was bitten by a vampire but who has been able to keep the turning in remission by taking some anti-HIV pills she got in Mexico City), Father Rodrigo[Cristian de la Fuente] (the only priest who escaped the massacre at the monastery), Sancho [Diego Luna] (a 15-year old boy who accompanied Derek on a vampire hunt and who found that he had a penchant for it), and Ray Collins [Darius McCrary] (a tall, muscular, black, ex-military, "tough as nails" guy recruited in Memphis by Brody). To help with the hunt, Rodrigo offers Derek the use of Guiteau's vampire-hunting bus, which is outfitted with all the winches and gizmos that are needed to hunt vampires (or "suckers," as the team calls them).

The attack on the monastery, Rodrigo explains, was led by the new female master Una [Arly Jover] in order to get back the Bersier cross. It looks like she intends to again perform the ritual which the suckers believe will allow them to walk during the day. After meeting up with Collins in Nogales, they cross over into Mexico. Zoey, due to her blood connection with the vampires, has a vision of Una performing the ceremony, but it doesn't seem to have worked. The sun still hurts her. Given a map of Mexico, Zoey is able to pinpoint where she thinks the bloodsuckers are hiding...someplace called Salina, near some old Toltec ruins. They stop for the night to sleep, but Collins is getting claustrophobic in the little bus and chooses to sleep outside. During the night, he is, unknown to anyone, bitten by Una. The next day is spent driving further into Mexico. They know that they are getting close when they stop for gas and cold drinks and find that everyone in the diner has been slaughtered.

The next morning, they near Salina. Rather than going directly to the ruins, they stop in Salina where the residents are celebrating the Day of the Dead ("Los muertos" means "the dead"). When Zoey goes to take her meds, she finds them missing and says that she must go immediately to Mexico City. Actually, Una has them, and she's downed every last one. This gives Una the ability, albeit it temporary, to move about during daylight, and she uses that opportunity to find and kidnap Zoey. Rodrigo puts 2+2 together and concludes that Una took Zoey's meds. But the only ones who had access to them were the rest of the team, so Derek holds them all at gunpoint, trying to find the culprit. Turns out that it was Collins, who is shot by an old man they just met that morning in Salina. With his dying breath, Collins reveals that the client who hired them is none other than Una.

Although they now know that this entire vampire hunt is a set-up, the remaining team members plus the old man, filling in for Collins, go to the ruins to rescue Zoey. Zoey has fallen into a deep shaft and needs to be lifted out. Derek tosses her a rope, telling the old man to stay far enough behind him to watch his back while still keeping his eye on Rodrigo and Sancho, who are closer to the exit. While they are so separated, Una attacks Derek. Just as she's about to bite his neck, Fr Rodrigo offers Una a deal. Let his friends go, and he'll offer himself, as a priest, to perform the ceremony. In addition, he points out, he is also a hunter--two of the necessary elements of the ritual. Una agrees.

Rodrigo stays with Una while the others go to a clinic where Zoey is transfused with blood while her infected blood is removed in hopes that this will slow her turning. Then Derek gets a brainstorm. He asks the nurse to transfuse Zoey's tainted blood into him so that he can slow his heartbeat and infiltrate the vampires without being noticed. As the sun sets, the team goes back to the ruins where the ritual is taking place. Una has slit Rodrigo's leg and drunk a cup of his blood when Rodrigo mentions that the ritual won't work because he was merely a hired hand at the monastery, not a priest at all. Ha ha, fooled you! Derek, whose plan to lurk is working, shoots several suckers, saves Rodrigo from being burned alive, and fires an arrow through Una. Unfortunately, the winch is on the fritz, and they can't pull her out into the sun.So, they fix the winch and go back into the ruins. Sancho ropes Una, Una grabs Derek, Zoey pulls both Una and Derek out into the sun, Derek shoots off Una's head, and Una burns up. [I wonder whether they'll get paid now that they've killed their client?]

Epilogue: Rodrigo stays in Salina, Sancho is sent home to his mother, and Derek and Zoey drive off together into the sunset, headed for Mexico City, as they are both in need of those meds. [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]

Summary Yi mei dao ren (1989)

A priest discovers that the water supply in his village has been contaminated by bats, and while in the process of digging a well to find new water supply, he inadvertently unearths the corpse of an evil Western priest.

Lam Ching-Ying returns as the famous "Vampire Buster," this time starring as the One-Eyebrow Priest. He discovers that the water supply in his village has been contaminated by bats and, while in the process of digging a well to find new water supply, he inadvertently unearths the corpse of an evil priest. While already dealing with a horde of creatures including a mischievous kid vampire, a lusty female ghost, and the spirit of a murdered prostitute, the corpse resurrects into a vampire.

Synopsis Yi mei dao ren (1989)

During an eclipse, evil reigns and the spirits wreak havoc. This eclipse is no different. First, a palm tree ghost attempts to seduce Master One-Eyebrow's bumbling assistants Fong [Fong Liu] and Hoh [Siu-hou Chin]. Next, the Little Vampire, who is like a son to Master, is in dire need of food, so Master One-Eyebrow [Ching-Ying Lam] feeds him on tomatoes. Then, while assessing the feng shui of the village, Master finds that the water supply is contaminated with bats which are traced to the local nunnery where Mother Superior [Maria Cordero] tends over her four nunlings. Master checks out the nunnery but finds no bats. However, he does find a locked meditation room with garlic hanging from the ceiling and the remains of a priest who disappeared, along with a second priest, many years ago.

The next day, Master returns to supervise the digging of a new well for the village. He lays out the plats but, since the best time for digging isn't until tomorrow, everyone retires for lunch and Master goes home to take a bath. While everyone is away, the bats move the marker. When the workers commence digging the well, they unearth an antique cross with a ruby attached. They pull it from the ground only to find that the cross has been impaled in a vampire. Master insists that the body be immediately burned, but the village Captain [Billy Lau] and his fiancee [Sandra Ng Kwan Yue], greedy for the ruby, substitute an old statue so that they can keep the vampire's body and saw off the gem. In doing so, Captain cuts himself and spills blood on the corpse. While Captain goes for medical attention, his fiancee stays to guard the corpse. The corpse awakens and makes a vampire of the Captain's fiancee.

Meanwhile, Fong and Hoh have gone into the village and gotten into trouble with the local pimp who places a curse on them. Upon their return to the monastery, Fong and Hoh find that they have attracted the ghost of a young prostitute, murdered at the whorehouse. She possesses Fong, but Master saves him and captures the prostitute's spirit in a jar. He sends Fong and Hoh to the whorehouse to find the prostitute's body...but no luck. Master constructs a magical hot-air balloon which he sets adrift to lead them to the spirit's body. It leads them to a graveyard and to the body of another young girl who has just fallen prey to the vampire. Thinking the body belongs to the spirit in the jar, Master takes it with them, but the vampire gives chase. This vampire is no chiang-shih. He is a western vampire (in fact, he is the missing second priest), and all the usual wards and Taoist spells don't seem to work on him. When Master pushes the vampire off a bridge into a deep canyon, the bats carry the Vampire's body to the nunnery.

The nuns are having a bad night, too. While trying to sleep, they are awakened by a large flock of attacking bats. One of the nuns runs to the monastery for the Master's help, but he is busy fighting off the Captain's fiancee (who is now a vampire). Fong and Hoh try to chase away both the bats and the vampire, but they are unsuccessful until Master and the Little Vampire show up with a load of dynamite and blow the roof off the nunnery, exposing the vampire to the sunlight. When the vampire tries to escape, Master sets him on fire and the vampire perishes in a pool of quicksand. [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]

Summary Empire Records (1995)

Twenty-four hours in the lives of the young employees at Empire Records when they all grow up and become young adults thanks to each other and the manager. They all face the store joining a chain store with strict rules.

A day in the life of the employees of Empire Records. Except this is a day where everything comes to a head for a number of them facing personal crises - can they pull through together? And more importantly, can they keep their record store independent and not swallowed up by corporate greed?

Empire Records is going to be turned into a Music Town. It is up to the wacky employees to figure out a way to raise enough money to help their boss Joe Reaves (Anthony LaPaglia) keep the store from changing hands. They also deal with problems amongst themselves, love, and a has-been spoiled rock star named Rex Manning (Maxwell Caulfield).

Synopsis Empire Records (1995)

Empire Records is a small independent record shop managed by Joe (Anthony LaPaglia). His employees are all high-schoolers and young adults. The store, like the employees, is eclectic and unique. The staff is very much a self-created family, with Joe as the reluctant and perpetually exasperated father figure.

Joe selects Lucas (Rory Cochrane) to close the store for the first time. While counting the days receipts, Lucas discovers that Empire Records is about to be converted into a branch of Music Town, a large and generic franchise music store. Lucas has an epiphany, and in an attempt to save the store, takes the day's cash receipts to Atlantic City. While initially very lucky, he loses the entire amount. The next morning, Mark (Ethan Embry) and AJ (Johnny Whitworth) find Lucas asleep behind the store, still perched on his motorcycle, and quickly deduce that Lucas has made a grievous mistake while entrusted with the store money. Lucas adopts a bizarre, almost zen-like attitude towards his actions. AJ and Mark feign ignorance as to the missing money when Joe discovers the night deposit was never made, and the money is missing.

Joe is distracted from dealing with this immediate crisis due to a scheduled publicity stunt. Rex Manning (Maxwell Caulfield), a pompous, fading pop singer, is due to arrive to sign autographs and promote his new album. No one is really looking forward to "Rex Manning Day" except cashier Corey (Liv Tyler), a overachieving student headed for Harvard University who has a schoolgirl crush on Rex, and plans to lose her virginity to him. Corey's friend and fellow cashier Gina (Renée Zellweger), a more adventurous and free spirit than Corey, encourages Corey in her pursuit of the much older Manning.

Empire's owner, Mitchell Beck (Ben Bodé), arrives to collect the missing deposit, but Joe covers for Lucas and plays for time by handing Mitchell a bag full of loose receipts. AJ confides in Joe that he loves Corey, and has chosen Rex Manning Day as the day he tells her. Lucas returns and rather than show repentance or guilt, calmly and repeatedly insists that everything will somehow work out, much to Joe's growing confusion and frustration. Joe forbids Lucas to leave the store (or even the couch in the break room) until he is able to repay the $9,000.

Deb (Robin Tunney), another store employee, arrives. She, as usual, is hostile and anti-social to the rest of the staff. She immediately locks herself in the bathroom, where she impulsively shaves her head. As she exits the bathroom, AJ sees that her wrists are bandaged and she admits that she attempted suicide. It's revealed that Berko (Coyote Shivers), a local rock musician and another store employee, has just broken up with her, but Deb insists that he wasn't the reason for her suicide attempt.

A young shoplifter who identifies himself only as Warren Beatty (Brendan Sexton III) is apprehended outside the store by Lucas. Soon after, Rex Manning arrives with his assistant Jane (Debi Mazar). Manning is condescending toward Joe, the rest of the staff, and his fans. Corey, after demanding (at the top of her lungs) that she be allowed to bring Rex his lunch, awkwardly attempts to seduce him during his lunch break. When Manning responds with a crude pass, Corey runs off, crying in embarrassment. A lovesick AJ finally attempts to tell Corey how he feels about her. Corey, emotionally overwhelmed by her encounter with her idol, tells AJ that she cannot handle his admission. Crushed, AJ abandons his plan. When Corey later attempts to assuage AJ's feelings by telling him she doesn't think of him that way, he rebuffs her. In the meantime, both Joe and Berko attempt to reach out to Deb, who refuses to explain her behavior or the circumstances that led to her bandaged wrists. Deb buries herself in work, but is clearly upset. As the afternoon progresses, the plan to convert Empire Records into a Music Town is revealed, and Joe admits that he had hoped to buy Mitchell out. However, Joe will now have to use his money to replace what Lucas lost, and Empire Records is now doomed to become a Music Town. Joe finally pummels Lucas in frustration.

The afternoon continues to spiral downward. Corey accuses Gina of encouraging her ill-advised behavior around Rex, implying Corey's effort to emulate Gina's promiscuity was Gina's idea and ultimately at fault for the failed seduction, and that Corey doesn't have to 'behave that way' around men. Outraged at the accusation and seeking to hurt Corey, Gina seduces Rex Manning, much to the horror of her friends. AJ attacks Rex, who leaves after getting in a lucky punch against AJ. When Corey confronts her, calling her a slut, Gina retaliates by revealing Corey's secret amphetamine habit, which helps her stay up all night studying. Corey has a hysterical episode and has to be physically restrained by Joe. Uncharacteristically, Deb shows sympathy towards the always perfect Corey having a near melt-down and helps calm her. Corey, after hearing about Deb's suicide attempt, arranges a "funeral" for her where all her friends gather around and say they'll miss her & talk about what they love about her. Lucas reveals that Joe actually rescued him from the orphanage as a teen, and was trying to repay him for his kindness. Deb admits she tried (and failed) to kill herself with a disposable razor...with a moisturizing strip.

During the mock funeral, "Warren" returns with a gun and holds up the store. Deb boldly confronts Warren, confusing him and distracting him from his plan, and the rest of the staff persuade Warren into admitting that he only returned because he because he felt kinship with the rest of the misfits in the store, leading Joe to offer him a job. After the police leave, Lucas admits defeat, and suggests calling Mitchell. However, his friends and co-workers (along with Jane, who has quit working for Rex), pool their resources to replace the missing money. Despite their best efforts, they are thousands short. Suddenly inspired, Mark runs out of the store and impulsively jumps in front of a news crew covering the hold up and announces a late night benefit party/concert to save Empire. Between AJ's art, various money raising efforts by the rest of the staff, a rooftop concert featuring Berko and Gina (who is finally fulfilling her longtime ambition to front a band), enough is made to replace the money Lucas lost. Joe and Lucas return the money to Mitchell, and promptly quit. Mitchell, appalled at the debacle and the prospect of managing the store without Joe, offers to sell it to him...cheap. Joe agrees. Corey tells AJ that she really does love him too, but that she now hates him for waiting so long to tell her how he felt. AJ tells her he has quit the store, and has been accepted to an art school in Boston, and they finally kiss.

Underneath the closing credits, Mark and a local pizza restaurant employee and friend, Eddie, discuss music while sitting on the curb outside the store.

Summary Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.

At the age of 9, Abraham Lincoln witnesses his mother being killed by a vampire, Jack Barts. Some 10 years later, he unsuccessfully tries to eliminate Barts but in the process makes the acquaintance of Henry Sturgess who teaches him how to fight and what is required to kill a vampire. The quid pro quo is that Abe will kill only those vampires that Henry directs him to. Abe relocates to Springfield where he gets a job as a store clerk while he studies the law and kills vampires by night. He also meets and eventually marries the pretty Mary Todd. Many years later as President of the United States, he comes to realize that vampires are fighting with the Confederate forces. As a result he mounts his own campaign to defeat them.

This movie speculates that Abraham Lincoln as a child saw his mother killed by a man she stood up to. Years later Abe would find the man and try to kill him but for some reason he doesn't die. He tries to kill Abe but a man saves him and nurses Abe. When Abe awakens, the man, Henry Sturges, tells him that the man he was trying to kill is a vampire and he is a vampire hunter. Abe wants to learn how to kill them and Henry teaches him and makes him an ax lined with silver, which is the weapon Abe prefers. Abe would then study law and move to Springfield to become a lawyer and to hunt vampires. He meets Mary Todd but Henry cautions him about relationships. Eventually Abe slays the vampire who killed his mother but before dying he tells Abe that Henry has not been honest with him. He confronts Henry, who doesn't deny it. Abe would come face to face with Adam, a vampire who plans to make the country his. Abe would give up hunting vampires, marry Mary and would continue his work as a lawyer and would become President. And when the Civil War breaks out, Abe learns that Adam is aiding the Confederacy and when it appears that they are close to winning, Abe must find a way to stop them.

This movie is about a young Abraham Lincoln who loses his mother after she is killed by Jack Barts, a vampire (she dies in front of him), so he grows up wanting to kill the person who killed her and while at a bar getting drunk he meets Henry Sturges, a person who teaches him how to fight and hunt Vampires. As time goes by he kills many Vampires, except the one who killed his mother, and he's getting impatient. He moves to Springfield and takes on a "normal" job as a store clerk and meets Mary Todd, who eventually becomes his wife. But the normal life is a cover for what he really needs to do, kill Vampires. So he becomes political and uses his popularity to climb the ranks to eventually become President while at the same time trying to take out the Vampire population, and eventually kill the head Vampire, and the one who killed his mother.

In the Nineteenth Century, the nine-year-old boy Abraham Lincoln witness the vampire Jack Barts sucking the blood and killing his mother. Years later, Abraham Lincoln seeks revenges against Jack Barts but he fails in his intent of killing the vampire. He is saved by Henry Sturges, who becomes his mentor and teaches how to hunt and kill vampires. Henry sends Abraham to Springfield to kill vampires. He gets a job and lodging in the store of Joshua Speed where he meets his black friend Will Johnson. Abraham also dates Mary Todd but keeps his vampire hunter business in secret. After killing Jack Bart, he calls the attention of the powerful and ancient vampire Adam. Abraham becomes a politician and the President of the United States, and sooner the leader of the Secession War against the vampires.

Explores the secret life of the America's greatest president, Abraham Lincoln, and the untold story that shaped the nation. The president discovers blood-thirsty vampires are planning to take over the United States. Lincoln makes it his mission to eliminate them, becoming history's greatest hunter of the undead.

Synopsis Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

In 1818, Abraham Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) lives in Indiana with his parents, Nancy (Robin McLeavy) and Thomas (Joseph Mawle), who works at a plantation owned by Jack Barts (Marton Csokas). There, Lincoln befriends a young African American boy, William Johnson (Anthony Mackie), and intervenes when he sees Johnson being beaten by a slaver. Because of his son's actions, Thomas is fired. That night, Lincoln sees Barts break into his house and attack Nancy. She falls ill the following day, and dies shortly afterwards. Thomas tells Lincoln that Barts poisoned Nancy.

Nine years later, Lincoln decides to get revenge against Barts. He attacks Barts at the docks, but Barts, who is actually a vampire, overpowers him. However, before Barts can kill him, Lincoln is rescued by Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper). Sturgess explains that vampires exist, and offers to teach Lincoln to be a vampire hunter. Lincoln accepts and, after a decade of training, travels to Springfield, Illinois. During his training, Sturgess tells Lincoln that the vampires in America descend from Adam (Rufus Sewell), a vampire who owns a plantation in New Orleans with his sister, Vadoma (Erin Wasson). Sturgess also tells Lincoln of the vampires' weakness, silver, and presents him with a silver pocket watch.

In Springfield, Lincoln befriends shopkeeper Joshua Speed (Jimmi Simpson), and meets Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Though Sturgess warned him not to form any close relationships, Lincoln develops romantic feelings for Mary.

Lincoln successfully finds and defeats Barts. Before dying, Barts reveals that Sturgess is also a vampire. Lincoln confronts Sturgess, who reveals that, several years ago, he was attacked and bitten by Adam. Because Sturgess' soul was impure, he became a vampire, and that prevented him from harming Adam or any other vampire (since "Only the living can kill the dead"). Sturgess has since been training vampire hunters, hoping to destroy Adam.

Disappointed, Lincoln decides to abandon his mission. However, Adam learns of his activities and kidnaps Johnson to lure Lincoln into a trap at his plantation. Adam captures Lincoln and tries to recruit him, revealing his plans to turn the United States into a nation of the undead. Speed rescues his friends, and they escape to Ohio.

Lincoln marries Mary and begins his political career, campaigning to abolish slavery. Sturgess warns Lincoln that the slave trade keeps vampires under control, as vampires use slaves for food, and if Lincoln interferes, the vampires will retaliate. After Lincoln's election as President of the United States of America, he moves to the White House with Mary, where they have a son, William Wallace Lincoln (Cameron M. Brown). He eventually signs the Emancipation Proclamation, setting the American Civil War in motion. William is later bitten by Vadoma and dies.

Confederate President Jefferson Davis (John Rothman) convinces Adam to deploy his vampires on the front lines. Lincoln orders the confiscation of all the silverware in the area and has it melted to produce silver weapons. Speed, believing that Lincoln will lead them to death, defects and informs Adam that Lincoln will transport the silver by train.

On the train, Adam and Vadoma attack Lincoln, Sturgess, and Johnson, who have set fire to the upcoming trestle. During the fight, in which Speed is killed, Adam learns that the train holds only rocks. Lincoln reveals that Speed's betrayal was a ruse to lure Adam into a trap. Lincoln uses his watch to stab Adam, killing him, and the three escape the train before it explodes. Meanwhile, Mary and the ex-slaves have transported the silver to Gettysburg through the Underground Railroad.

The now leaderless Confederate vampires stage a final, massive assault and are met head on by the Union. Armed with their silver weapons, the Union soldiers destroy the vampires and win the war.

A few months later, on April 14, 1865, Sturgess tells Lincoln that the remaining vampires have fled the country. Sturgess unsuccessfully tries to convince Lincoln to allow him to turn Lincoln into a vampire, so that he can become immortal and continue to fight vampires. That night, John Wilkes Booth kills Lincoln.

In modern times, Sturgess approaches a young man at a bar in Washington, D.C. as he once approached Lincoln.

Summary Empire of the Sun (1987)

A young English boy struggles to survive under Japanese occupation during World War II.

Based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel, tells the story of a boy, James Graham, whose privileged life is upturned by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, December 8, 1941. Separated from his parents, he is eventually captured, and taken to Soo Chow confinement camp, next to a captured Chinese airfield. Amidst the sickness and food shortages in the camp, Jim attempts to reconstruct his former life, all the while bringing spirit and dignity to those around him.

1941. The Japanese are occupying much of China in the Sino-Japanese War. Diplomatic security protects the International Settlement in Shanghai, the many westerners there still leading a very comfortable, western-styled life. Twelve year old Briton Jamie Graham, the son of a mill owner, has lived his entire life in the International Settlement, that life one of wealth and privilege. As such, Jamie, an airplane aficionado, is a spoiled child, who has not even learned Chinese, expecting any natives with who he deals, including the household domestics, to speak English. That comfortable life changes with the Japanese entry into WWII through the attack at Pearl Harbor. Simultaneously, the Japanese overtake the Settlement, including all its private property, forcing its western residents to evacuate immediately. It is through Jamie's self-absorption that he becomes separated from his parents during the evacuation, he, now alone, needing to fend for himself for the first time in his life. It is during this time if Jamie will grow up and learn to live within the new tenuous situation that he will either live or die, life which he hopes will mean eventually being reunited with his parents sometime down the road.

An aristocratic British youth is seperated from his family at the start of World War II after the Japanese Army invades British controlled areas of China. Reduced to living on the street and fighting for food, the youth is eventually interned in a Japanese POW camp for British civilians. Here, admiration quickly develops both for captured American pilots and the Japanese themselves. When the war ends, the boy torn from everything he knew attempts to again find his parents.

Synopsis Empire of the Sun (1987)

The story begins in 1941, just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Jamie Graham is a precocious and privileged boy living with his parents in Shanghai. His father is a rich British businessman and the family lives in a mansion on the outskirts of the city and Jamie attends an exclusive prep school. Much has been done to shelter Jamie from the Chinese culture that surrounds him and he is quite spoiled, treating the family's servants with utmost disrespect. Very interested in aviation, Jamie harbors an interest in one day joining the Japanese air force, a dream that his father finds disturbing.

The family attends a costume ball thrown by one of the father's business associates, Mr. Maxton. While there, Jamie runs off to fly his wooden glider. He finds the wrecked fuselage of a fighter plane near an abandoned airfield. While he plays with the controls, his glider slips out of sight behind a mound. He scrambles up the mound and finds an encampment of Japanese soldiers. While he stares at them, his father and Maxton appear and call him down, specifically telling Jamie not to run. As they walk away and the Japanese soldiers return to their camp, Jamie remarks that they "seem to be waiting for something to happen". Maxton suggests that Graham take his family to their apartment in the city and seek an exit from Shanghai, most likely by sea.

The family returns to their Shanghai apartment. Early the next morning, Jamie spots a Japanese warship in the harbor communicating with land forces using flashing lights. Jamie begins using his own flashlight from his room when an explosion throws him back from his window. The Japanese move into the city in full force. Jamie's family is able to make it to their limousine but are unable to get very far due to the crowds of people filling the streets. They exit the limo and find themselves crushed and separated among the crowd. Jamie's mother manages to hold on to Jamie when separated from her husband but Jamie lets go of her hand when he drops his toy plane. He sees his mother being helplessly pushed away and she bids him to return to their mansion. Shortly after Jamie witnesses fighting between the Chinese resistance and the Japanese army, seeing a man die in front of him for the first time. The resistance fighters are quickly found and killed.

Jamie arrives home to find the house empty. He sees signs of a struggle in his parents bedroom, perhaps indicating that his mother was taken from the house by force. He hears noise downstairs and finds the maid of the house with the other Chinese servant, stealing furniture. When Jamie demands to know what they're doing, the servant, whom Jim had treated badly over the years, calmly walks over and slaps his face and leaves.

Jamie stays in the house several months (indicated by the falling level of water in the swimming pool), eating whatever food he can find. When his food and water run out, he rides his bike back to Shanghai to find that the Japanese have long since cemented their control of the city. Jamie tries to surrender to a passing battalion of marching soldiers but they ignore him and his bike is stolen. A homeless Chinese boy notices Jamie and tries to call him over. Jamie refuses and runs through the streets and back alleys, people ignoring his cries for help. The Chinese boy catches and beats him, taking whatever Jamie has on him. Jamie manages to break free and runs into the street, nearly being hit by a truck. The truck's driver, Frank, scares Jamie's tormentor off and takes Jamie with him to an abandoned freighter where Frank's friend, Basie, is cooking rice. Basie deftly searches Jamie for anything of value, taking Jamie's aviator sunglasses and a British crown coin he'd found in the swimming pool. He also gives Jamie a new name, "Jim" and coldly serves Jamie Frank's share of the rice he'd made.

The next day Frank and Basie set about trying to "sell" Jim to anyone who needs a manual laborer. When they're unable to sell Jim they decide to leave him to the streets as an orphan. Jim pleads with them to let him stay, even offering them the pickings of rich houses in his old neighborhood outside the city. The three travel to Jim's old house where the lights are on and music, Jim's mother's favorite tune, can be heard. However, the house has been seized by the Japanese, who march out immediately and capture all three. As Jim is held back, Basie is severely beaten.

Basie and Jim find themselves in a holding center for foreign prisoners in Shanghai. They spend a significant amount of time there; Jim discovers that the other kids there will steal openly from him to survive, a tactic he also learns from Basie. One day, when the Japanese come to select prisoners for transport to an official camp, Basie is chosen, who boards the truck and ignores Jim's pleas to take him along. Jim begs the driver to take him along and finds that the driver is unsure of the route to the camp. Jim assures the driver that he can guide them to the camp, which is near his parents' old country club. The truck driver throws the annoying Jim into the truck and they leave.

The truck arrives at Soochow Creek Interment camp, which is situated right next to an airbase construction site. As the prisoners get off the truck they are ordered to carry white stones up to the spot where a runway is being laid. Jim breaks off from the group, seeing a work area for Japanese Zero airplanes. As he touches one of them, a guard, Nagata, prepares to shoot him. A group of three Japanese pilots approaches and Jamie salutes them; Nagata lowers his rifle when the pilots return Jamie's salute.

The story jumps ahead to the Summer of 1945, near the end of the war. Jim has etched out a considerably active life for himself involving an intricate trade network among the other British prisoners and even Nagata himself, who has since been invested as the commanding officer of the camp. While dropping off Nagata's freshly polished boots, Jim slyly steals a bar of soap from the sergeant. Jim's last stop is at the camp infirmary, where he aides the camp doctor, Rawlins, in performing CPR on a dying patient. The woman moves her eyes slightly, seemingly looking at Jim, who now believes he's brought her back to life. Jim appears to lose control, frantically pumping the woman's chest and Rawlins is forced to throw Jim off the dead woman. Rawlins has been schooling Jim in Latin and classical poetry, but is unable to teach Jim to recognize when his efforts go too far. Jim leaves the hospital and goes to the American prisoners barracks, delivering the soap to Basie. Basie shows Jim his latest project which involves laying snares in the marsh next to his barracks, hoping to catch pheasants for next Thanksgiving. Basie also makes a deal with Jim: if Jim lays the snares, Basie will let Jim move into the American dorm and take him along if he finds a way to escape the camp.

That night the airbase is bombed by American pilots, who drop a bomb very close to the prison camp. In retaliation, Nagata and a few of his officers begin breaking windows in the British and American barracks. When Nagata moves on the infirmary, Rawlins tries to stop him. The sergeant begins to violently and mercilessly beat the doctor. Jim steps in, smashing two windows and begging Nagata in Japanese to cease his punishment, which he does. Rawlins, in gratitude for Jim's actions, gives Jim a pair of two tone golf shoes that belonged to a recently deceased patient.

The next day, Jim steals away from the camp to the marsh near the American dorm. Waiting for the tower guard to sit down and leaving his golf spikes behind, he crawls into the marsh to place Basie's snares. However, Basie has another motive for planting the traps: he is using Jim to test the marsh for mines. Moments later, Nagata appears and yells at the guard to take up his post. Nagata finds Jim's shoes and wades into the marsh after him. He is just about to find Jim when a Japanese boy from the airbase calls the sergeant over; the boy has lost his toy glider in the marsh and Nagata retrieves it for him. As the two walk away, the boy salutes Jim, whom he'd seen all along. Jim is given his own space in the American dorm, much to Frank's chagrin, who has to give up some of his own personal space for the young upstart.

One day, Basie and another American prisoner, Dainty, are going over potential escape plans using a cork and needle as a compass (provided them by Jim & his pilfering network). Nagata shows up unexpectedly and sees how comfortably Basie has been living. He also finds the bar of soap stolen by Jim and becomes instantly furious, beating Basie severely. Basie leaves Jim in charge of his possessions, knowing he'll be sent to the infirmary. Jim visits him there after seeing through his binoculars that Basie has been given the mosquito net usually reserved for dying patients. (Basie tells him that he merely bribed Dr. Rawlins for it.) During their conversation, Basie suddenly asks Jim why he isn't back at the dorm minding Basie's things; Jim says that the older and larger men in the dorm took everything, Jim being fairly helpless to stop them. Ashamed, Jim leaves the American dorm shortly after Basie returns from the hospital.

Now essentially homeless, Jim awakes one morning after falling asleep on the grounds of the camp and sees a kamikaze ritual taking place at the airbase. Moved by the ceremony, he begins to sing "Suo Gân" a Welsh folk song from his childhood days of singing in the choir. As the planes take off one suddenly explodes in midair; a squadron of American P-51 Mustang fighters have arrived and begin to destroy the airbase. Exhilarated, Jim climbs to the top of a bombed-out building to watch the battle and sees one of the American pilots waving at him. Jim begins to scream in joy. As the battle continues, Rawlins, fearing for Jim's safety, yells for the boy to come down. Jim doesn't listen and Rawlins climbs after him, finally catching him as the battle winds down. He yells at Jim to return to reality and Jim breaks down, saying he can't recall what his parents looked like. Rawlins carries him down, Jim blankly reciting the poem that Rawlins had been teaching him.

The next day, the camp is evacuated by Nagata. The prisoners are told that there will be food waiting for them further inland and a march is quickly started. As they leave, Jim sees the young Japanese boy he'd befriended through the camp wire taking the ceremonial drink of the kamikaze pilots. The boy jumps into his plane but cannot take off because the plane refuses to fire up.

The group reaches Nantao Stadium, many miles away, where the Japanese spoils from Shanghai are stored. Among the automobiles there, Jim finds his father's old limo. After being told that there's no food or water there, Jim stays behind with Mrs. Victor, a woman who acted as a guardian to Jim back in Soochow. Jim tells her to act dead so they can stay, however, Mrs. Victor actually dies. As a devastated Jim sits with her body, he sees a gigantic flash of light to the east, one of the atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Japan. Jim believes it is Mrs. Victor's ascending soul, however, he hears a radio broadcast later that reports about the new weapon and the surrender of the Japanese Empire, ending the war.

As the starving and weakened Jim staggers back to Soochow he notices large canisters falling from the sky on parachutes. They are from the Red Cross and contain food and other supplies. Jim gathers what he can and returns to the prison camp. There he finds the young Japanese boy from the airbase, who is angrily slashing at the marsh with his samurai sword. Recognizing Jim, he stumbles away crying. Jim hears an engine revving and sees a car break through a wall of fire. In the car are Basie and a couple of other men he'd joined up with who are looting the relief containers. The Japanese boy offers Jim a mango and is about to help Jim cut it with his katana when he is shot by one of Basie's companions. As the man rushes over Jim flips him into the marsh and leaps on him, wildly punching him. Basie pulls Jim off, who turns his attention to the Japanese boy. He tries to revive him using CPR but the boy is clearly dead and Basie again pulls Jim off. As he tries to soothe Jim, Jim pulls away, a crazed look in his eye; Jim's experiences during the war of stealing, death and fear have finally pushed him onto the path to adulthood. Basie decides to leave Jim behind, knowing Jim will survive. Jim stays in the camp a bit longer, riding a bike like he did in childhood and laughing. He is found by a U.S. Army unit, to whom he "surrenders".

Jim returns to Shanghai and is housed in an orphanage for child war prisoners. The kids are assembled by the nuns for a group of parents who have returned to Shanghai following the war; Jim's parents are among them. They wade through the sea of children, not able to find Jim at first, but spot him after a few moments. Jim, scarred from his experiences and still in shock, doesn't believe his own eyes as he recognizes his mother by her face and hair and eventually collapses in her loving arms.

Summary Inland Empire (2006)

As an actress begins to adopt the persona of her character in a film, her world becomes nightmarish and surreal.

After an uncomfortable, borderline disturbing visitation by a cryptic neighbour, the fading movie star, Nikki Grace, is thrilled to hear that she has just landed herself the female lead role in director Kingsley Stewart's sensational Southern melodrama called "On High in Blue Tomorrows". However, as she gradually disappears into her complex role, Nikki's character, Susan Blue, starts to emerge from the labyrinthine pathways of her unconscious, creeping into her delicate consciousness. More and more, as Nikki's dissociation becomes more aggressive, and her self-transcendent experience sets in motion a sometimes subtle, sometimes profound transformation, parallel worlds interweave, and a mysterious lost girl tuned into the TV sitcom, Rabbits (2002), begins to take shape. Is Stewart's ambitious project doomed to fail?

The actress Nikki Grace is invited to perform the role of Susan Blue as the lead actress of the movie "On High In Blue Tomorrows", directed by Kingsley Stewart. Nikki's husband is a jealous guy and the co-star is the wolf Devon Berk that will perform Billy Side, the husband of Susan. In the rehearsal, Kingsley tells that the movie is a remake of an unfinished and damned Polish production where the two lead stars had been murdered. While shooting the movie, Nikki has daydreams, mixing her real life with the fictional Susan.

Synopsis Inland Empire (2006)

The film begins with an image of an old vinyl playing "the longest-running radio play in history." Indistinguishable filtered voices can be heard in the recording.

Eventually the scene fades into what appears to be a dimly lit hotel hall, where a man and a woman, both of whose faces are blurred beyond any recognition, stumble into a hotel room. Speaking Polish, the man asks the woman to undress, which she does reluctantly. As she does this, the man asks her if she knows what whores do, to which she replies "they fuck." Presumably the woman is herself a prostitute.

Next, in another hotel room, a raven-haired woman, known only as the Lost Girl (Karolina Gruszka) sits crying while watching a television.

On the television is an eerie sitcom about a family of rabbit-people in a small room who speak in terse, seemingly meaningless sentences, that are occasionally followed by a non-sequitur laugh-track. The female rabbit talks about a "secret" that apparently the male rabbit knows about. A knock at the door transpires. All three rabbits are captivated by it, and the male rabbit goes to answer it, but the knocker is not revealed. He walks out through the door and it closes behind him.

The Male Rabbit enters a dimly lit room, which then fades into a lavish golden room where a bald man sits on a couch. Another gruff-looking Polish man stands talking to him. The seated man talks about seeking an opening, and the standing man juggles variations of the phrase "do you understand?"

The scene changes. An old woman with bulging eyes (Grace Zabriskie), walks down a suburban neighborhood, looking dizzy. She steps onto the porch of a lavish mansion and when a butler answers, she introduces herself as a "new neighbor" who would like to greet the homeowner. The house belongs to Nikki Grace (Laura Dern), a well-known actress, and she invites the old woman in. The neighbor says that she heard Nikki got a new part for a film called On High in Blue Tomorrows. Nikki tells her it isn't for certain since the audition took place very recently, but the woman insists she has gotten it. The neighbor then talks about a boy who opened a door and saw the world, thus creating a reflection that caused evil to be born. She adds "a variation" of the tale, about a girl who got lost in an alley behind a marketplace, and then remembered something. The woman then asks if there's a murder in the movie for which Nikki auditioned. Nikki says no. Nikki, increasingly confused and unsettled by the woman's manner, asks her to leave. Ignoring Nikki, the neighbor explains that she has trouble keeping track of time: yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows. She remarks that it may be 9:45 a.m. when it is in fact after midnight. The neighbor points across the room and says that, if it were tomorrow, Nikki would be over there. Time shifts and we see Nikki, now sitting where the woman indicated, receive news via telephone that she's won the audition.

An indefinite time after she hears that she has gotten the part for the film, Nikki appears with her co-star, Devon Berk (Justin Theroux) on "The Marilyn Levins Show", a talk show akin to "The View" and other celebrity programs. Marilyn asks both actors whether or not they will have an on-set affair, to which both Nikki and Devon respond negatively. Afterwards, Devon is told by his entourage that Nikki is "hands-off," since Nikki's husband is an extremely influential and powerful figure.

Afterwards on a studio soundstage, Nikki and Devon prepare to read through the script with their director, Kingsley Stewart (Jeremy Irons) and his assistant Freddie Howard (Harold Dean Stanton). Later, while they rehearse a scene, there is a disturbance somewhere in the set. Devon goes to investigate the noise, but doesn't find anything. Kingsley chooses the tense moment to disclose, reluctantly, that On High in Blue Tomorrows is in fact a remake of an older unfinished Polish film called 47, which was abandoned since it was rumored that it was cursed. Kingsley nervously assures them both that nothing will come of it.

At this point, Nikki's world begins to blend with that of the film they are making, putting into question whether or not the alleged "curse" is in fact real.

A woman with severe stomach wounds (Julia Ormond) tells a cop she is going to kill someone with a screwdriver. This actress will later reappear as the wife of Billy Side, a character in Nikki's film.

In early 20th Century Poland, prostitutes confront various pimps while murder permeates their city.

In present-day Poland, a mafia-like organization discusses one of their captives, remarking that the man claimed he was from "Inland Empire."

One day off the set, Nikki is shopping for groceries when she sees "Axx o Nn," chalked onto a wall with an arrow pointing to a door. She passes through the door and enters a movie studio. She hears voices and begins running. She looks back: she sees herself, Devon, Kingsley and Freddie from the scene earlier in the movie when they heard a strange noise. Devon comes along to investigate just as he did before. Susan realizes that SHE was in fact the intruder, and that she had heard herself sneak into the studio. Nikki evades exposure by hiding behind the facade of the house in the movie where her character lives. When she crosses the threshold, it miraculously metamorphoses into an actual house somewhere in the suburbs. Nikki sees it is filled with prostitutes who are having a surreal party, and dancing to 60's music. She listens to their stories, smoking and donning their suggestive garb, eventually becoming one herself.

It slowly turns out that Nikki is in fact Susan Blue, the character that she portrays in the movie, who lives in a suburban home with her husband Smithy. Nikki (now called Susan) is at a backyard party with her husband and several of his circus troupe associates. She sees two of the prostitutes from earlier scenes seated on the grass some distance away and addresses a question to them that they asked her earlier in the movie: "look at me, and tell me if you've seen me before." Susan wanders into a backyard dressed in a business suit and finds a man with a light bulb in his mouth. Frightened, she brandishes a screwdriver at him, and runs away.

Susan runs down Hollywood Boulevard, attempting to flee the woman with the screwdriver who is now stalking her. Wandering the streets bloody and lost while attempting to escape the treacherous woman, Susan hides in a nightclub, where she meets in a back room with a fat man with glasses known only as Mr. K (Erik Crary). She begins an epic and foul-mouthed monologue in which she unloads all her childhood scars, including being molested as a girl, when she gouged out the eye of her rapist.

Susan leaves the nightclub and runs down the street where the woman stabs her with the screwdriver and leaves her for dead. Susan wanders over to a closed down storefront where she collapses to the ground, coughing up blood and sees three homeless people-- a black man (Terry Crews), a woman missing half of her teeth, and a young Japanese woman-- staring at her. The Japanese woman, speaking with an almost unintelligibly thick accent, rambles on to Susan and her street friends about her drug addicted friend Nico who lives in Pomona with her pet monkey. Susan then dies, and.... Kingsley yells "Cut!" The entire event is revealed to be the movie's final scene shot, and the street people are actors who walk off the set.

Susan, now turned back to Nikki, leaves the set and wanders through the streets to an old hotel where, down a dark corridor, she finally confronts the standing man from earlier in the film, known now as "The Phantom." She shoots him, which causes his face to become hideously disfigured, at first becoming a disturbing copy of Nikki's own face, but eventually morphing into something closely resembling a fetus. We next go to the rabbits again, who are once more faced with the opened door.

Nikki then goes to the hotel room where the Lost Girl is being held, opens the door and with a bright light and kiss from Nikki, the Lost Girl is freed from her prison and disappears, as does Nikki. The Lost Girl returns to her home in the suburban San Fernando Valley where she is the real Susan Blue and she is reunited with her husband Smithy and her young son who are happy to be back together at last. Nikki reappears in the mansion where she was first introduced, calm and smiling once more.

The film ends in a hotel lobby as the group of prostitutes join another group of women in dancing to Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" while two lumberjacks saw a tree.

Summary Requiem pour un vampire (1971)

Two girls on the run get lost in the French countryside, and wind up in a haunted chateau occupied by an ailing vampire and his servants.

Synopsis Requiem pour un vampire (1971)

Two pubescent, pig-tailed, virgin schoolgirls, Michelle [Mirielle d'Argent] and Marie [Marie Pierre Castel], run away from their school and find themselves lost in a cemetery which leads to a chateau inhabited by vampires and naked women in chains. The girls try to escape, but they are bitten by the vampires' aging Master. The Master decides to initiate the girls in order to make them perpetrators of the vampire race (which is about to die out). Eventually, of course, the girls will have to be deflowered because 'you cannot be both virgin and vampire.' For now, however, their job will be to hunt by day and lure victims back to the chateau for the vampires to feed upon. Michelle brings back a victim, but Marie takes pity on hers (Frédéric [Philippe Gasté]), begs him to be the one to deflower her, and then sets him free.

Tonight is to be the grand initiation. First goes Michelle. Then it's Marie's turn. When the Master discovers that Marie is no longer a virgin, the vampires set out to search the chateau for her defiler. Frederick takes refuge in the Master's mausoleum. Then the Master takes Marie for a walk and tells her a secret. He is the last vampire, and there will be no more. Only Erica [Dominique Toussaint] has the chance to complete the change. The others will change slightly over time, but they will never be full vampires. He then sets Marie free and returns to his mausoleum.

The next morning, Michelle confronts Marie and tells her that she must reveal where Frédéric is hiding or they will both be killed. Marie refuses, so Michelle chains her and spends the day whipping her, kissing her, and apologizing for hurting her. But Marie refuses to talk. When Erica threatens to poke out Marie's eye, Michelle helps Marie to escape. Of course, Marie leads everyone directly to the mausoleum where Frédéric is hiding. A gunfight ensues. All the vampires are killed except for the Master, Erica, and Louise. The Master tells Louise to seal him and Erica in the tomb and never let them out again. After their deaths, there will be no more vampires. [Original Synopsis by bj_kuehl.]
